An Interview with Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl is probably the best loved children's author ever!  He's also a 2012 World Book Day author.    He has won many awards for his books including the Whitbread Award for The Witches in 1983, the Smarties Award in 1990 for Esio Trot and the Blue Peter prize forMatilda in 2000. In 2008 the Roald Dahl estate launched an award in his name – the Roald Dahl Funny Prize.

What’s it like writing a book?

When you’re writing it’s rather like going on a very long walk, across valleys and mountains and things, and you get the first view of what you see and you write it down. Then you walk a bit further, maybe up on to the top of a hill, and you see something else, then you write that and you go on like that, day after day, getting different views of the same landscape. The highest mountain on the walk is obviously the end of the book because it’s got to be the best view of all, when everything comes together and you can look back and see everything you’ve done all ties up. But it’s a very, very long slow process.

The Writing of LIA's Textbooks

     After all the subsidies from USIS ceased, LIA was completely on its own.  There was the difficulty of getting coursebooks from the US in such large numbers on time to distribute them to the students.  At the time, there was also the rise of Communicative Language Teaching as the current methodology being used in language courses in the US and other countries where the demand for English as a tool for communication was growing.

     With the prompting and support of then Executive Director Suryodipuro, the Teaching Section took the courageous step of writing LIA's own textbooks.  Intitiated by Gloria Kismadi, Siti Soeriyah, and Maya Jayapal, the writing of the textbooks also involved teachers who had the writing ability and imagination combined with a good grounding in language teaching principles.  Thus, LIA's Communication in English series, based on Communicative Language Teaching principles in contexts in which Indonesians would need to use the language, came into existence.  The series not only covered primary to intermediate levels of language learning but also Post-Intermediate and Advanced levels.

     This was the start of the creation of a Materials Writing Team under the leadership of Siti Soeriyah, and later, Anneke Senduk.  Since that time, promising writers have been recruited to write coursebooks needed by LIA, always with a view to looking at current language teaching theories and incorporating them into classroom materials.
     After all the progress and manifold achievements through painstaking journey and endless hardwork, isn't it an irony that we now decide to use imported books?

Memancing Ide Bersama Kak Benny

     Bertempat di ruang Perpustakaan, Museum Bank Mandiri, Kota, Jakarta, sebanyak 28 anak berusia 7 hingga 12 tahun mengikuti pelatihan menulis ”Bukan Penulis Biasa”, yang diadakan selama dua hari, Sabtu dan Minggu, 5 dan 6 Mei 2012 oleh Galeri Kelas Ajaib (GKA).

     Pelatihan menulis ”Bukan Penulis Biasa” dibimbing langsung oleh kak Benny Rhamdani, penulis cerita anak, founder Galeri Kelas Ajaib, yang juga chief editor di salah satu penerbit nasional.

Kak Erna & Kak Dinda

     Setelah melakukan registrasi ulang, hari pertama pelatihan diisi dengan perkenalan peserta yang dipandu oleh kak Indah Juli dan kak Erna Fitrini. Peserta diminta menuliskan nama, hobi, cita-cita dan hal menarik lainnya dari teman yang duduk di sebelahnya. Awalnya malu-malu, akhirnya para peserta bisa saling mengenal teman-temannya.      

     Setelah itu, ada sharing motivasi penulisan dari salah satu penulis cilik yang sudah menerbitkan 4 buku yaitu, Kak Alya Namira Nasution atau Kak Dinda. Menurut Kak Dinda, dengan ikut pelatihan menulis bisa memotivasi untuk semangat menulis. ”Tapi, jadi penulis itu harus sabar saat mau menerbitkan buku, karena nggak bisa langsung jadi buku. Aku menunggu satu tahun baru punya buku sendiri,” kata Kak Dinda yang baru-baru ini memenangkan lomba penulisan di salah satu penerbit nasional.

     Setelah sharing kak Dinda, akhirnya tibalah waktu belajar menulis bersama kak Benny Rhamdani. Supaya adik-adik peserta tidak bosan, kak Benny mengajak adik-adik bermain kata membentuk suatu cerita. Misalnya kak Benny berkata : ”Suatu hari, kak Benny berjalan, tiba-tiba menemukan...?" Dilanjut oleh peserta yang ditunjuk kak Benny, dengan kalimat : menemukan seekor kucing.

     ”Kucing itu lucu seperti...” kata kak Benny lagi sambil meminta peserta yang lain melanjutkannya.
